Oversized and heavy vehicles are mainly controlled through Chapter 1137. In designated residential areas, vehicles over 14,000 pounds are barred from non-truck-route County roads (Section 1137-020) and those over 10,000 pounds may not park on County roads (Section 1137-040). Levee roads bar most vehicles (Chapter 1140), and weight limits protect bridges and unimproved highways.
Unincorporated Sutter County addresses oversized and overweight vehicles chiefly through Chapter 1137 (Use Restrictions on Commercial Vehicles) of the Traffic Code rather than a stand-alone oversized-vehicle parking ban. In a designated Unincorporated Residential Area (defined by Section 1137-012), Section 1137-020 prohibits driving, operating, or towing a commercial vehicle with a gross weight over 14,000 pounds on County roads not designated truck routes, and Section 1137-040 prohibits parking any commercial vehicle over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating on County roads there. Section 1137-030 designates truck routes, and Sections 1137-100 through 1137-105 address temporary road weight-limit reductions and weight limits for bridges and unimproved County highways. Section 1137-110 covers transportation permits for loads exceeding standard limits. Separately, Chapter 1140 (Restricting Travel on Levees) prohibits parking on levees (Section 1140-010) and restricts travel by heavier vehicles. The County does not appear to publish a specific residential ordinance limiting parking of personal oversized vehicles such as large RVs by length alone; for those, the general 120-hour on-street limit (Section 1120-120) and any posted restrictions apply. Permits and weight-limit questions are handled by the County's Development Services and Public Works functions. California Vehicle Code size and weight limits (such as Sections 35701, 35712, and 22507.5, all cited in Chapter 1137) apply countywide.
Operating a vehicle over 14,000 pounds on a non-truck-route residential County road (1137-020), parking a vehicle over 10,000 pounds GVWR on a residential County road (1137-040), parking on a levee (1140-010), or exceeding a posted bridge or unimproved-highway weight limit without a transportation permit are violations.
