Takoma Park enforces its own parking rules. Residential permit zones exist near the Metro. Vehicles must move every 48 hours. Snow emergency routes require clearance.
Takoma Park operates its own parking enforcement program through the city police department. Residential Parking Permit (RPP) zones exist near the Takoma Metro station and in commercial areas along Carroll Avenue and Laurel Avenue, requiring permits for extended daytime parking. Outside RPP zones, general street parking is allowed without time limits unless signs indicate otherwise, but vehicles must be moved at least once every 48 hours to avoid being classified as abandoned. Street sweeping schedules require vehicles to be moved on designated days in some areas. Vehicles must display current Maryland registration. During snow emergencies, the city declares parking restrictions and vehicles on emergency snow routes must be moved to allow plowing. Takoma Park issues its own parking citations separate from Montgomery County. Meters are not used on residential streets. The city has been progressive in adding bike lanes and traffic calming, which has reduced on-street parking availability on some corridors.
Expired registration on street: citation. Failure to move within 48 hours: abandoned vehicle process. Snow emergency violation: towing at owner expense. RPP zone without permit: citation.
