Under the California Building Code as adopted by Riverside County, one-story detached accessory structures used as tool or storage sheds, playhouses, or similar purposes are exempt from building permits if the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet. Even exempt sheds must comply with Riverside County zoning setback requirements under Ordinance No. 348 — typically 5 feet from side and rear property lines in residential zones.
