Columbus allows privacy fences up to 6 feet in rear and side yards. Front yard fences are limited to 4 feet. Fences over 6 feet require a building permit. Corner lots must maintain sight visibility triangles per Columbus City Code.
Columbus City Code and the Zoning Code regulate fence heights and construction. Residential privacy fences in rear yards and interior side yards may be up to 6 feet tall without a building permit. Front yard fences are limited to 4 feet. Fences over 6 feet require a building permit from Building & Zoning Services. Corner lots must maintain a sight visibility triangle β typically 30 feet from the corner β where fence heights are restricted to ensure driver visibility. Pool fences must be at least 48 inches high with a self-closing, self-latching gate per the Ohio Building Code. Fences cannot encroach on public rights-of-way or utility easements. Materials must be durable. Chain-link fences are permitted but barbed wire is prohibited in residential zones. The finished side of the fence should face outward.
Non-compliant fences: notice of violation. Over-height or unpermitted fences may need to be modified or removed.
