Columbus does not impose a citywide overnight parking ban on residential streets, but posted permit-only zones exist near Ohio State University, downtown, the Short North, and German Village. Parking during declared snow emergencies is separately restricted on marked snow routes.
General residential streets in Columbus allow on-street overnight parking for properly registered, operational vehicles. The city has not enacted a universal overnight ban of the kind found in many smaller Ohio municipalities. However, Columbus operates a growing Residential Permit Parking (RPP) program in high-demand neighborhoods. Permit areas require a decal between posted hours (often 7 p.m.-7 a.m. in campus zones, varying in the Short North and German Village).
During declared snow emergencies, vehicles must be removed from marked Snow Emergency Routes to allow plowing. Violators can be ticketed and towed at owner expense. Columbus also prohibits parking the same vehicle on a public street for more than 72 consecutive hours; vehicles that do not move within that window can be tagged as abandoned and towed.
Recreational vehicles, boats, and trailers have additional restrictions in most residential zoning districts and cannot be stored on the street long-term. Commercial vehicles over a set weight or length are barred from residential streets overnight under Chapter 2151.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Columbus code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
