Mecklenburg County and Charlotte permit garage sales without a permit, limited to a small number of sales per year and daytime hours. Charlotte Code §6-172 allows up to 4 garage sales per calendar year per household.
Charlotte Code §6-172 (Yard Sales) allows residents up to 4 yard sales per calendar year, each lasting no more than 3 consecutive days, during daylight hours. Sales must occur on the resident's own property (not in public rights-of-way or parking lots). Only household items may be sold; commercial merchandise is prohibited without a business license. Mecklenburg County unincorporated areas follow similar customary standards. Signs must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends per Charlotte Sign Ordinance §13.
Exceeding 4 sales per year or running past 3 days can be treated as operating an unlicensed business: $100-$500 civil penalty plus required business license fees.
