Trash and recycling carts must be stored behind the front building line of the home between collections. Charlotte Code Chapter 10 and Mecklenburg County property maintenance standards prohibit carts visibly stored in front yards or driveways visible from the street.
Charlotte Code Β§10-81 requires that rollout carts be removed from the curb by the end of collection day and stored out of street view. Acceptable storage locations include the side yard behind the front building plane, backyard, or inside a garage or enclosure. Mecklenburg County Code Β§12-36 applies similar rules in unincorporated areas. HOAs in the Charlotte metro routinely impose stricter storage rules including screening requirements. Code enforcement responds to neighbor complaints. Multi-family properties must provide screened dumpster enclosures per zoning.
Charlotte: $50 civil penalty for first offense, $100 for repeat violations within 12 months. Persistent noncompliance can be referred to the housing code enforcement team.
