Apex, NC Property Maintenance: Trash Bin Storage (2026)

Apex residential solid-waste service is operated under a Town franchise with GFL Environmental (formerly Waste Industries). The Town's Garbage, Recycling & Yard Waste page (apexnc.org/277) sets out the operational rules. Garbage and recycling are collected weekly on each address's assigned day; residents are directed to roll their carts to the curb the night before the scheduled collection day. Because GFL uses automated side-loading trucks, garbage and recycling carts must be placed three to four feet apart and clear of vehicles, mailboxes, and other obstructions so the truck's automated arm can grip and lift the cart. Yard waste is collected on the business day following garbage and recycling collection — typically loose-piled brush, leaves, and grass at the curb (no plastic bags). Holiday collection: when a holiday falls on a collection day, garbage and recycling collection postpones to the following day and the rest of that same week also slides by one day. During inclement weather, collection is postponed until it can be safely resumed. Pumpkins are not accepted in yard waste (placed in trash, or dropped at Public Works). Bulk-item pickup is arranged through the online service request form or by calling 919-249-3311; large items, appliances, and furniture require advance scheduling. Missed pickups and damaged or missing carts are also reported to 919-249-3311. Use of an unauthorized hauler within Town limits is generally prohibited under the Town's franchise. Carts may not be left in the public right-of-way longer than the collection window — keeping a cart at the curb for days afterward, or storing it in a front yard visible from the street, can be cited as a nuisance under Town Code Chapter 14 (Offenses and Miscellaneous Provisions). UDO landscape and accessory-structure rules generally require trash containers in single-family lots to be screened from street view between collection days.
