Dearborn property maintenance code requires refuse containers to be stored out of view from the street and kept in good repair with closed lids.
Dearborn has adopted property maintenance provisions based on the International Property Maintenance Code that regulate how residential refuse containers are stored between pickups. Carts must be kept in the rear or interior side yard and may not be permanently stored in the front yard, on the driveway within view of the street, or on porches. Containers must be structurally sound with functioning lids that close completely, and overflowing or broken carts are a blight violation. The city encourages screening with fences, landscaping, or enclosures around carts where yard layouts make rear storage difficult. Tickets for visible or damaged carts start as warnings but escalate to civil infractions with fines.
