Unincorporated Knox County does not register short-term rentals. There is no county STR registry or annual renewal. Operators must, however, register with the Knox County Clerk to remit the county's hotel/motel occupancy tax.
Knox County has no short-term rental registration ordinance for the unincorporated area. Unlike the City of Knoxville, which registers and permits STR units, the county has adopted no STR registry. The only county registration touching short-term rentals is a hotel/motel/campground/other occupancy tax account: operators of lodging (including STRs) file a monthly occupancy-tax return with the Knox County Clerk. Tennessee law (TCA 13-7-602 et seq.) permits local STR registration, but Knox County has not enacted one for the unincorporated area.
No STR-registration penalty exists in unincorporated Knox County. Failure to file the required occupancy-tax return with the County Clerk carries interest and penalties (see taxes and fees).
