Sarasota County has not adopted a short-term-rental registration program. Commissioners directed staff in April 2026 to study one. Until then, registration means the state DBPR license plus the Tax Collector tourist-tax account.
Unlike the City of Sarasota, unincorporated Sarasota County currently has no local STR registry or certificate. On April 2026 the County Commission unanimously directed staff to report on a possible program that 'can include additional regulatory requirements such as designated responsible parties, initial and ongoing inspections, parking arrangements, maximum occupancies, etc.' Any adopted program would still be constrained by state preemption. For now, 'registration' means: obtain the DBPR transient-lodging license and open a Sarasota County Tourist Development (bed) tax account before renting.
No county registration penalty exists yet. Renting without the required state license or tourist-tax account exposes owners to state and Tax Collector enforcement.
