Galveston STRs pay a $250 annual city registration fee (per unit) plus a 15% lodging tax: 9% City of Galveston hotel occupancy tax and 6% Texas state HOT. Unincorporated county STRs still owe the 6% state tax.
The City of Galveston's annual STR registration fee is $250 per rental unit, due by December 31 preceding the license year; late registration adds a $500 late fee. Owners collect and remit the 9% city hotel occupancy tax to the City (formerly the Park Board) with a monthly report, even in months with no rentals. Texas Tax Code § 156.052 imposes a 6% state HOT on top. In unincorporated Galveston County, counties cannot zone but the state 6% HOT and any county HOT under Tax Code Ch. 352 (capped at 7%) still apply.
Failure to register or remit HOT is a Class C misdemeanor, fine up to $500 per offense with each day separate, plus a $500 late fee and possible suspension.
