Lake Forest allows garage and yard sale signs under Municipal Code Section 9.164.110. One on-site sign up to 4 square feet is permitted at the sale residence, plus a limited number of off-site directional signs (also 4 square feet) displayed only between dawn and dusk. No permit is required, and signs must be removed immediately after the sale.
Garage and yard sale signage is covered by Lake Forest Municipal Code Chapter 9.164. Under Section 9.164.110(A)(14), an on-site garage or yard sale identification sign may be up to 4 square feet, limited to one sign per garage-sale residence, placed on private property, and must be removed on or immediately following the date of the event. Off-site directional signs are addressed in Section 9.164.110(A)(15): they may also be up to 4 square feet, with a total of three signs allowed (one per corner per direction), and may only be displayed between dawn and dusk. While these directional signs may be placed in the public right-of-way, they are not permitted in a street median. No sign permit is required for garage-sale signs. The city's broader sign rules in Section 9.164.100 prohibit most signs from the public right-of-way and bar off-site advertising such as billboards and snipe signs, so the garage-sale directional allowance is a narrow exception. Because the city ties these signs to the event date and to daylight hours, signs left up after a sale or posted overnight are subject to removal. Many Lake Forest neighborhoods also operate under HOA rules that may further restrict yard-sale signage.
Garage-sale signs left up after the event, displayed overnight, exceeding 4 square feet or the three-sign off-site limit, or placed in a median or other prohibited location may be removed by the city and can lead to code enforcement action.
