Newport Beach restricts the placement and duration of garage sale signs to maintain community aesthetics. Signs may be displayed on private property during the sale only and must be removed immediately after the sale ends. Off-site directional signs on public property, utility poles, and street signs are prohibited.
Newport Beach's sign code regulates temporary garage sale and yard sale signs as part of its broader sign ordinance under NBMC Title 20. Garage sale signs on the seller's private property are permitted without a permit during the hours of the sale. Signs are limited to a reasonable size, generally not exceeding 6 square feet. Signs must not be illuminated or placed in a manner that obstructs pedestrian or vehicular sight lines. Off-site directional signs placed on public property, street medians, utility poles, traffic signs, or in the public right-of-way are prohibited and subject to immediate removal by Code Enforcement or Public Works crews. Signs attached to city trees or park property are also prohibited. All signs must be removed immediately upon conclusion of the sale. Signs left overnight or posted in advance of the sale may be cited. Newport Beach limits garage sales to a certain number per year per residence, and signs must correspond to an actual permitted sale. The city actively patrols for sign violations on weekends when garage sales are common. Code Enforcement can be reached at (949) 644-3215.
Off-site signs placed on public property are removed without notice. Signs left up after the sale ends may result in an administrative citation of $50 for the first offense and $100 for subsequent violations. Repeated sign violations may be considered in determining future garage sale permit eligibility.
