San Antonio's Public Works Department issues block party permits for temporary residential street closures. Applicants must submit a request with signatures from at least 75% of residents on the affected block. Permits are free and typically processed within 10-15 business days.
The City of San Antonio Public Works Department administers block party permits for temporary street closures on residential streets. Applicants must complete a Block Party Permit Application and obtain signatures from at least 75% of residents and property owners on the block to be closed. Only residential streets may be closed; arterial and collector streets are not eligible. The permit covers a single day, typically from a specified start time through the end of the event. No barricade deposit is required, but the city provides traffic barricade specifications. The applicant is responsible for placing and removing barricades. Emergency vehicle access must be maintained at all times. No alcohol may be served on the public street without a separate TABC permit. Block parties may not obstruct access to driveways of non-participating residents. Applications should be submitted at least 15 business days before the event.
Blocking a public street without a permit: Class C misdemeanor, fine up to $500. Failure to maintain emergency access may result in immediate event shutdown by SAPD.
