Above-ground pools over 24 inches deep trigger NYS Residential Code Appendix G barrier rules. Removable ladders or a 48-inch barrier around the pool top are required. Schenectady County has no separate rule.
Under Appendix G, an above-ground pool wall may itself serve as the barrier if it is at least 48 inches above grade on the outside and access ladders/steps either meet the self-latching requirements or are removable/secured when not in use. Alarm and GFCI requirements of Β§387(14) also apply to post-2006 installations. Municipal building permits are required for above-ground pools over 24 inches deep in most Schenectady County municipalities.
Unpermitted installs: $250β$1,000 and stop-work; Uniform Code penalties for barrier/alarm gaps.
