Worcester County, MA Swimming Pools & Spas: Fencing Requirements (2026)

Swimming pool barrier rules across Worcester County are uniform because the Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR Appendix G) and State Sanitary Code Chapter V (105 CMR 435) apply identically in every municipality — Worcester County government's abolition in 1998 has no effect on these state-level safety rules. Residential pool barriers must be at least 48 inches high with no climbable features and openings no wider than 4 inches (or 1¾ inches below a horizontal rail). Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch mounted at least 54 inches above grade. The house wall can serve as part of the barrier if doors leading to the pool have audible alarms or self-closing mechanisms. Pre-October 2, 1975 pools are grandfathered under an older standard requiring a 4-foot fence with self-latching gates under 105 CMR 435. Above-ground pools over 48 inches high may use removable/lockable ladders in lieu of a full fence perimeter if the pool structure itself meets barrier specs. Pool covers meeting ASTM F1346 may substitute where permitted. Worcester ISD, Fitchburg Building Department, and every other municipal building department inspect barriers before final approval.
