Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (FL Β§515) requires at least one additional safety feature beyond the pool barrier: a pool alarm, approved safety cover (ASTM F 1346), door alarm on direct-access doors, or self-closing/self-latching doors at 54 inches. Anti-entrapment drain covers (VGB Act) are mandatory.
Sec. 515.27 F.S. provides that failure to equip a new residential pool with required safety features is a second-degree misdemeanor. Compliance options include: pool with an approved safety cover per ASTM F 1346; pool isolated by an enclosure meeting all barrier requirements; or a combination of partial barrier, dwelling wall, alarms, and self-closing/self-latching devices installed at minimum 54 inches above the threshold. All pools must have anti-entrapment drain covers per the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.
Pool safety violations carry fines of $200β$1,000. Non-compliant drain covers must be replaced within 30 days. Failure to meet safety standards may result in pool closure orders.
