Washoe County requires self-closing, self-latching pedestrian gates that open away from the pool, entrapment protection at suction outlets, and either a safety cover or door alarms where a house wall forms the barrier. Public spas may not exclude supervised children under 12.
Under Washoe County's adopted ISPSC Section 305, pedestrian access gates must be self-closing with a self-latching device; where the latch release is under 54 inches, it must sit on the pool side at least 3 inches below the gate top. Suction outlets must be designed per ANSI/APSP-7 to prevent entrapment. For public pools, Nevada's NAC 444.136 mandates a complete barrier that is impenetrable to small children, with gate self-latching mechanisms at least 3.5 feet high. NRS 444.070(2) forbids denying a supervised child under 12 the use of a public spa.
Missing or non-self-latching gates, unprotected suction outlets, or absent door alarms fail inspection and must be corrected before final approval; the county may withhold occupancy of the pool.
