An outdoor pool, spa or hot tub in unincorporated Washoe County must be fully enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high, complying with the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code Section 305. The barrier must be installed and approved before the pool is gunited or filled.
Washoe County's residential handout adopts ISPSC Section 305: the top of the barrier must be at least 48 inches above grade, the gap under it no more than 2 inches, and openings cannot pass a 4-inch sphere. Vertical members must be spaced under 1.75 inches where horizontal rails are closer than 45 inches apart. Chain-link mesh is capped at 2.25 inches. Public pools are separately governed by Nevada's NAC 444.136, which requires a completely enclosing fence, wall or building at least 5–6 feet high depending on the facility.
Filling or guniting a pool before the permanent barrier is installed and approved is prohibited; owners may post a $1,000 bond pre-gunite. Non-compliance triggers failed inspection and correction orders.
