Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Chapter 515) requires at least two safety features for all residential pools. Pools must be maintained with clear water free from insects, algae, and unsanitary conditions. The Florida Building Code governs drain cover standards, and residential pool alarms are one of the required safety options.
Under Florida Statutes Chapter 515, residential pools must have at least two of the following safety features: a pool safety barrier (fence/enclosure), safety pool cover, pool alarm on the pool, door alarms on all house doors leading to the pool, or self-closing/self-latching doors with release mechanisms 54 inches above floor level. The Florida Building Code requires compliant drain covers meeting the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act standards. Miami Gardens Code Enforcement requires that pools be maintained with clear water free from insects, algae, or other unsanitary conditions. Abandoned pools must be drained and secured. Pools used as short-term rental amenities must comply with all safety requirements.
Unmaintained pools with green water or unsanitary conditions are a common code violation. Missing safety features violate state law. Violations may result in fines and orders to drain the pool.
