Beyond fencing, Tarpon Springs enforces Florida's pool safety package requiring approved drain covers, alarms or covers, and at least one approved safety feature per the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act.
Tarpon Springs follows Florida Statutes 515.27, which requires every new residential pool to have at least one of four safety features: an isolation barrier, an approved automatic pool cover, exit alarms on doors and windows providing access to the pool, or self-closing, self-latching devices on those doors. Drains must comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act with anti-entrapment covers. Existing pools that fail to meet these standards may not be reopened after substantial repair without compliance. The Building Development Department inspects new construction; the Code Enforcement Division (727-937-0017) responds to complaints about unsafe pools or unsecured properties citywide.
Failure to maintain required safety features is a second-degree misdemeanor under FS 515.27, plus city code enforcement fines that may accrue daily until corrected.
