Bernalillo County offers scheduled bulk item pickup and operates convenience centers for large items. Appliances must have refrigerant removed by a certified technician per EPA rules. Electronics and HHW go to the Advanced Resource Recovery Facility.
Bernalillo County Solid Waste provides bulk item collection by appointment for subscribers, typically once or twice per year per household. Eligible items include furniture, mattresses, and large appliances after EPA Section 608 refrigerant recovery. The Southside Transfer Station accepts bulk waste, tires, and yard debris for a per-ton fee. Household hazardous waste (paint, batteries, solvents) and electronics go to the Advanced Resource Recovery Facility (ARRF) on Edith Blvd on scheduled drop-off days. City of Albuquerque residents use the SWMD large-item pickup program under ROA 1994 Β§9-10. Construction and demolition debris must go to a permitted C&D landfill, not curbside. Illegal dumping on public land or arroyos is a serious offense and Bernalillo County has actively prosecuted dumping in the bosque and East Mountain areas.
Illegal dumping under NMSA Β§30-8-4: up to $1,000 fine and/or 364 days jail (misdemeanor), felony for loads over 1 ton. Setting bulk items out before scheduled day: $50 to $200 under Ch. 58. Appliance with intact refrigerant: EPA violation up to $37,500 per day.
