There is no mandatory county trash service in unincorporated Sedgwick County. Residents may contract with a licensed hauler, self-haul to a permitted transfer station, bury their trash, or burn it in a Fire Department-approved burn barrel. Haulers must be licensed by the county.
Sedgwick County does not run or require a single curbside program in the unincorporated area. The county's Environmental Resources division states residents "can contract with a solid waste hauler, bury their trash, burn their trash in a burn barrel specified by the Sedgwick County Fire Department, or self-haul to a permitted disposal site." Multiple companies (Waste Management, Waste Connections and others) are licensed to haul waste in the county. Self-hauled trash goes to a transfer station and then to the Plumb Thicket Landfill in Harper County. Burning is restricted, no rubber, plastics, roofing, garbage or petroleum products, and generally requires a burn permit.
Unlicensed hauling and improper open burning are prohibited; burning banned materials or dumping instead of disposing can lead to enforcement under the solid-waste code and state law.
