The City of Santa Barbara requires all single-family (1-4 unit) and multi-family (5+ unit) residential properties to subscribe to trash, recycling and yard waste service through franchised hauler MarBorg Industries. Since July 1, 2025, carts must be wheeled curbside by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled service day.
Trash collection in the City of Santa Barbara is provided exclusively by MarBorg Industries under a franchise agreement with the City, and subscription is mandatory. The City 'requires all single family residential properties (1-4 units) to subscribe to trash, recycling and yard waste collection services' and likewise 'requires all multi-family residential properties (5 or more units) to subscribe to trash, recycling and yard waste collection services.' Effective July 1, 2025, the City moved to automated curbside collection: 'all residential customers will need to wheel their carts to the curbside on their scheduled service day(s),' and carts must be 'placed curbside by 6:00 a.m. on their service day or the night before.' Carts must then be returned to an on-property storage location by noon the next day. Trash carts are available in 96, 64 and 35 gallon sizes so customers can pay for the volume they need, and backyard (in-place) collection is offered for an additional fee with a free waiver for qualifying residents 80 or older or with a disability. The City emphasizes that recycling and compost services cost half the price of trash service, encouraging right-sizing of the trash cart. Service is started, stopped or changed by calling MarBorg at (805) 963-1852. These are City of Santa Barbara requirements; the County operates separate solid-waste rules for unincorporated areas.
Properties are required to subscribe to service; lack of subscription is a code-compliance matter. After the three-week grace period that began July 1, 2025, improper cart placement is enforced and MarBorg may charge for missed pickups.
