Bergen County recycling is mandatory under the New Jersey Recycling Act of 1987. Residents must separate paper, glass, metal, and plastic containers, with collection handled by each municipality or the BCUA.
The New Jersey Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act (N.J.S.A. 13:1E-99.11) requires all residents and businesses to separate designated recyclables. The Bergen County Solid Waste Management Plan, administered by the BCUA, identifies mandated materials including newspaper, corrugated cardboard, glass containers, aluminum cans, steel cans, plastic bottles (resin codes 1 and 2), and leaves and brush. Each municipality enforces the plan locally with curbside or drop-off collection. The BCUA also operates a recycling center in Hackensack. Yard waste is mandated for separate collection in fall. Cross-contamination of recyclables can lead to rejection of entire loads.
First-offense fines under N.J.S.A. 13:1E-99.34 range from $25 to $500. Repeat violations and commercial non-compliance can reach $2,500 per violation per day.
