Bergenfield requires owners, lessees, and occupants to separate paper, glass, plastic, metals, e-waste, batteries, yard waste, and other recyclables from trash under its mandatory recycling ordinance.
Article IV of Chapter 266 establishes Bergenfield's mandatory recycling program. All owners, lessees, and occupants of residential, commercial, and institutional properties must separate leaves, grass clippings, branches, vegetative yard waste, newspapers, magazines, office-grade and mixed paper, aluminum, tin, glass, plastic bottles, cartons, e-waste, batteries, white goods, oil, antifreeze, construction and demolition debris, and ferrous metals from trash and garbage. Recyclables must be empty and clean before placement. Plastic bags, plastic film, paper bags, and cardboard boxes are prohibited as recycling receptacles. Residential yard waste may be placed in biodegradable paper bags for curbside collection.
Mixing recyclables with trash, contaminating recycling receptacles, or using prohibited containers can result in fines under Bergenfield's solid waste ordinance.
