NYC Local Law 19 of 1989 mandates source separation of recyclables. Bronx residents must separate paper (green bin), metal/glass/plastic/cartons (blue bin), and organics (brown bin) from trash. Organics curbside program expanded borough-wide to the Bronx in October 2024.
NYC Admin Code Β§16-305 requires all residences to recycle. Green bins take mixed paper and cardboard. Blue bins take rigid plastic (1-7), metal, glass, beverage cartons. Brown bins (new to Bronx 2024) take food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste. Plastic bags and film are NOT accepted curbside (return to grocery stores). Styrofoam is banned citywide under Local Law 142.
Residential non-recycling: 25 dollars first offense, up to 100 dollars per subsequent. Building owners receive Notices of Violation.
