Indianapolis recycling is opt-in (not mandatory) β residents subscribe for ~$99/yr through Republic Services. No penalty for not recycling. Drop-off sites available countywide.
Unlike many large cities, Indianapolis does not mandate residential recycling. Curbside recycling is an opt-in subscription program with Republic Services (approximately $99/year for biweekly 96-gallon cart pickup). Accepted materials: paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, steel cans, and plastics #1β#2. Free drop-off recycling is available at all 8 IndyCAN/DPW sites countywide including the South Transfer Station and Broad Ripple Park. Multi-family buildings over 4 units must contract separately with a commercial hauler. The city has not adopted a mandatory recycling ordinance despite Indianapolis Sustainability Plan goals.
No penalty for not recycling. Contamination in subscription cart: hauler may skip or surcharge. Commercial illegal dumping at drop-off sites: up to $7,500.
