Metro Nashville protects Landmark Trees under Metro Code Β§17.24. Trees designated by Metro Tree Advisory Committee for size, age, or significance cannot be removed without Planning Commission approval.
Metro Code Β§17.24 and the Metro Tree Advisory Committee designate Landmark Trees based on trunk diameter (typically 30+ inches DBH), species significance, age, or historical association. Notable examples include champion trees at Cheekwood, Warner Parks, and historic Belle Meade sites. Landmark Trees cannot be removed without Metro Planning Commission review and special justification (imminent hazard, disease). Construction within the critical root zone requires tree protection plan reviewed by Urban Forestry. Damage during permitted development triggers replacement at 3:1 or higher ratio plus monetary appraised value. Nomination for landmark status available through Metro Tree Advisory Committee.
Unauthorized removal: fines up to $10,000 plus appraised tree value replacement. Root zone damage: remediation, monitoring, and replacement. Violations can block certificate of occupancy.
