Takoma Park, MD Tree Protection: Heritage & Protected Trees (2026)

Under Chapter 12.12 and the Takoma Park Urban Forest Program, certain trees receive enhanced heritage or champion designation based on their exceptional size, species rarity, ecological value, age, or historical significance to the community. Heritage trees are identified through the city's tree inventory program and may include specimens designated under the Maryland Big Tree Program or the National Register of Champion Trees. Removal of a heritage-designated tree is permitted only when the tree is dead, poses an imminent safety hazard verified by the city arborist, or when no feasible alternative exists for an approved construction project. When removal of a heritage tree is unavoidable, the city may require enhanced replacement plantings at a ratio of three-for-one or more, along with a monetary contribution to the city's tree planting fund. Pruning of heritage trees requires city arborist approval and must be performed by a certified arborist following ANSI A300 pruning standards.
