Richardson's tree ordinance (Ch. 22.5) requires permits for removing protected trees (6+ caliper inches) on non-single-family residential property. Applications are processed by Development Services with Parks Department consultation.
Chapter 22.5 of the Richardson Code governs tree removal permits. Protected trees (6 caliper inches or larger, excluding unprotected species) on property not zoned single-family residential require a removal permit. The Development Services Department processes applications in consultation with the Parks and Recreation Department. Approved reasons include damaged, diseased, or dangerous trees. The Tree Board advises the City Council on tree preservation matters. For single-family residential properties, the requirements are less restrictive, but the ordinance still encourages preservation. Mitigation is required: 1:1 caliper inch replacement for protected trees and 2:1 for specimen trees (24+ caliper inches).
Unauthorized removal of protected trees carries a penalty of $2,000 per tree per day. Replacement mitigation is required.
