Richardson adopts the International Fire Code (2021 Edition) per Sec. 8-27, which requires smoke alarms in all residential units. Texas Property Code Sec. 92.255 also requires landlords to provide working smoke alarms in rental properties.
Under Richardson's adopted International Fire Code (2021 Edition, Sec. 8-27), smoke alarms are required in all residential dwelling units. The IFC requires smoke alarms in each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the dwelling. Texas Property Code Section 92.255 additionally requires landlords to install and maintain smoke alarms in rental properties. Richardson's Building Inspection Department enforces smoke alarm requirements during inspections. Carbon monoxide detectors are also required where fuel-burning appliances are present under the adopted codes.
Failure to install or maintain smoke alarms may result in fire code violations. Landlords who fail to provide working smoke alarms face liability under Texas Property Code.
