Richardson, TX Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Section 18-96(35) defines a window sign as one located on the internal or external surface of a window and restricts it to retail, commercial, office, technical office and industrial zoning districts, not residential. The size limit caps window signage at 25 percent of the total visible window area of each building facade; when window signs are combined with poster marquee signs on the same elevation, the two sign types together still cannot exceed that same 25 percent of the window area of the tenant. Outlining a window, or multiple windows on one elevation, with lighting, luminescent or gaseous tubing counts as a window sign, and its effective area is calculated by multiplying the length of the light strip or tubing by the height or width of the window it runs along.

Permitted designs include signs painted with water-durable paint on the exterior, posters and banners on the interior surface, decorations for public events painted on the exterior while keeping the 25 percent visibility requirement, noncombustible signs attached to the exterior, interior signs naming the business or listing its phone number or address, emergency-contact or security-hours signs up to one square foot, and alcohol-sale signage, which must also satisfy the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code. No permit is required for a compliant window sign under subsection (g).
