Grand Prairie's fire prevention code (Chapter 12 - Fire Protection and Emergency Management) adopts the International Fire Code with local amendments. Smoke alarms are required in each sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity, and on each additional story including basements. Chapter 28 (Housing Enforcement) requires landlords to maintain properties to minimum housing standards including working smoke detectors. The city's Fire Prevention Division conducts inspections and enforces fire code compliance. Texas Property Code Section 92.255 also requires landlords to install and maintain smoke detectors in rental properties.
