Grand Prairie has no city-adopted Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) code and no state-mapped wildfire hazard severity zone. Texas relies on the Texas A&M Forest Service Wildfire Risk Assessment Portal (TxWRAP) for advisory WUI mapping. The city follows Tarrant and Dallas County burn bans during elevated fire danger.
Unlike California's CAL FIRE Fire Hazard Severity Zone system, Texas does not designate statewide wildfire hazard zones with binding building or vegetation requirements. Grand Prairie has not adopted the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC); only a few Texas cities (notably Austin, which adopted the IWUIC in 2020) have done so. Wildfire risk in Grand Prairie is mapped advisorily by the Texas A&M Forest Service through the Texas Wildfire Risk Assessment Portal (TxWRAP) and the Functional Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) classification, which categorizes parcels near undeveloped vegetation. Portions of southern Grand Prairie near Joe Pool Lake, Mountain Creek Lake, and the Fort Worth Nature Center fall into intermix or interface WUI categories under TxWRAP, but no special construction or defensible-space rules attach as a result. Grand Prairie adopts the 2021 International Fire Code under Chapter 12 (Fire Prevention) of the City Code, effective January 1, 2022. Outdoor burning is regulated by TCEQ rules (30 Tex. Admin. Code Ch. 111) and county burn bans issued by Tarrant or Dallas County Commissioners Courts under Tex. Local Govt. Code 352.081, which can run for up to 90 days when wildfire danger is elevated. Residents in WUI-classified areas should follow Firewise USA guidance voluntarily. Confirm any neighborhood-specific wildfire requirements with the Grand Prairie Fire Marshal at 972-237-8334.
Because no WUI code is adopted, there are no zone-based construction or vegetation citations. Violations of an active Tarrant or Dallas County burn ban are Class C misdemeanors under Tex. Local Govt. Code 352.081, punishable by fines up to $500. Violations of the IFC (e.g., open flame in dry conditions) may be cited under Chapter 12.
