Tallahassee requires all accessory structures, including carports, to maintain a 10-foot setback from every property line, stay out of front yards and side-corner yards, and sit at least 6 feet from any other structure on the lot.
Land Development Code Sec. 10-411 (Article VII, Supplementary Regulations) governs accessory structures. All accessory structures must be set back at least 10 feet from any property line, unless the permitted principal-structure setback is smaller, in which case the accessory structure follows the principal setback. Carports and other accessory structures may not be placed in front yards or side-corner yards. A minimum separation of 6 feet from any other structure on the same lot is required. Swimming pools are similarly restricted to side and rear yards. Building permits are required for permanent carports under the Florida Building Code.
Violations are subject to code enforcement action and fines under the city's general penalty provision (Code of Ordinances Sec. 1-7), up to $500 per day.
