Tallahassee's Land Development Code Section 3-401 restricts fence materials by zone. Barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fencing are prohibited in residential districts. Wood, vinyl, chain-link, and masonry are standard permitted materials.
Tallahassee LDC Chapter 3, Article VII, Section 3-401 ('Erection and Materials for Fences and Walls') governs allowable fence construction materials. In residential zoning districts (R-1 through R-3 and equivalent), barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fencing are prohibited. Permitted materials include wood, vinyl (PVC), chain-link, wrought iron, aluminum, and masonry block or brick. In commercial and industrial zones (C-1, C-2, I-1, I-2), barbed wire or razor wire toppers may be permitted on security fences above 6 feet in height, subject to Growth Management Department approval. All fences must be constructed of durable, weather-resistant materials and maintained in a structurally sound condition. Enforcement is by the City's Code Compliance Division.
Prohibited-material fences in residential zones are code violations. First offense: written notice and 30-day cure period. Non-compliance results in civil fines and mandatory removal at the owner's expense.
