Beekeeping is generally permitted in Suffolk County subject to town zoning. No county-wide prohibition exists. NY Ag and Markets Law Article 15 regulates apiaries statewide and requires registration with the NY Department of Agriculture and Markets.
Most Suffolk towns permit beekeeping in residential zones with setback requirements from property lines, typically 10 to 25 feet. Commercial apiaries must register with NYS Ag and Markets under Article 15. Suffolk County Cornell Cooperative Extension runs a master beekeeper program. East End agricultural zones are especially permissive given the region farming character.
