Beekeeping in unincorporated Kern County is governed by state apiary law. All apiary owners must register their colonies and locations with the Kern County Agricultural Commissioner each January, post identification signs at each apiary, and keep registrations current.
California Food and Agricultural Code sections 29040 through 29046 govern beekeeping in unincorporated Kern County. Every apiary owner, broker, or possessor must register colony counts and locations on January 1 each year, filing with the Kern County Agricultural Commissioner under section 29043. Anyone acquiring bees or moving them into the state must register within 30 days under section 29042. Section 29046 requires a prominently displayed sign on the entrance side of the apiary showing the owner's name, address, and telephone number, plus landowner approval for apiaries on land the beekeeper does not own. Section 29044 sets an annual statewide registration fee of up to $250, which the Board of Supervisors may waive for hobbyists with nine or fewer colonies.
Maintaining an unregistered apiary is unlawful under Food and Agricultural Code section 29045. The Kern County Agricultural Commissioner enforces registration and identification requirements, and noncompliant apiaries can face citations under the state code.
