Cats in unincorporated Sarasota County must be vaccinated for rabies at four months and older and may not run at large on public property or a neighbor's land. There is no numeric limit on cats per household.
Sarasota County Code Chapter 14 covers cats alongside dogs. Section 14-37 requires all cats four months of age or older to be vaccinated for rabies, annually or per an approved triennial vaccine schedule, by a Florida-licensed veterinarian. Section 14-41's running-at-large rule applies to cats as well as dogs: a cat may not stray or run at large on public streets, sidewalks, other public property, or a neighbor's property unless leashed, and officers may impound loose cats. The county sets no maximum number of cats, but nuisance and sanitation standards still apply to excessive animals.
Unvaccinated cats violate the rabies requirement; cats at large may be impounded with reclaim fees. Nuisance conditions from cats can prompt civil citations.
