Up to six hens (no roosters) may be kept on a residentially zoned lot under Chesterfield's coop, setback and enclosure rules. All livestock and poultry must stay within the owner's property boundary or the owner faces a fine.
Chesterfield allows a maximum of six hens on residentially zoned property, kept in a coop with an attached run of at least 10 square feet, topped with wire mesh, and set back at least 25 feet from all property lines; roosters are prohibited and hens may not run loose. For all farm animals, County Code makes the boundary line of each lot the lawful confinement limit for domesticated livestock and poultry. Larger herds and agricultural keeping are governed by the county Zoning Ordinance (Agricultural district).
Permitting livestock or poultry to run beyond the confined-area boundary is unlawful and subject to a fine of up to $250; zoning violations enforced by Planning.
