Sacramento County allows backyard chickens in most residential zones: up to 6 hens on lots under 10,000 sq ft, no roosters in RD zones. Coops must be set back 20 feet from dwellings on adjacent parcels.
Title 7 (Zoning) of the Sacramento County Code allows hens in RD-1 through RD-5 residential zones without a permit up to 6 birds on typical suburban lots. Roosters are prohibited in RD zones due to crowing nuisance. AR (Agricultural-Residential) and AG zones allow substantially more birds and permit roosters. Coops and runs must be set back 20 feet from neighboring dwellings, kept sanitary, and food stored in rodent-proof containers. Slaughter for personal consumption is permitted on AR and AG parcels.
Code Enforcement citations starting at 100 dollars; repeat 500 dollars; coop removal orders for unsanitary conditions.
