Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a leash for my dog on my own property in Yolo County?
No. Section 6-1.401.1 only applies when a dog is off the property where its owner keeps it. On the owner's own land the leash requirement does not apply, though other Animal Control Law duties, such as the proper-care requirement in §6-1.405, still apply on-property.
How long can a leash be under Yolo County's law?
It cannot exceed eight feet. Section 6-1.401.1 sets that exact figure; a longer lead, a flexi-leash extended past eight feet, or no leash at all puts the owner in violation unless one of the four listed exemptions applies to that specific situation.
What happens if Animal Services picks up my unleashed dog?
Beyond a misdemeanor citation under §6-1.422(a), §6-1.401.2 lets the County charge the owner a fee for the actual cost of taking up, herding, or otherwise responding to the loose dog, separate from any impound fee charged under Article 8 if the dog is impounded.
Are working ranch dogs exempt from the leash rule?
Yes, if the dog is actively herding on a parcel zoned for agricultural use. That exemption, added by Ordinance 1365 in 2007, also covers dogs with peace officers, licensed hunters under the Fish and Game Code, and dogs enrolled in organized training or competition.
