The Bronx follows NYC Health Code Β§161.01, which bans an extensive list of exotic animals including ferrets, venomous snakes, all non-human primates, big cats, bears, crocodilians, and raptors. Violations carry $2,000 fines and mandatory animal seizure. The Bronx Zoo (WCS) holds a special USDA/DEC permit.
Section 161.01 of the NYC Health Code enumerates prohibited wild animals: all felids other than domestic cats, all canids other than domestic dogs, all non-human primates, all bears, all venomous reptiles, all elapid and viperid snakes, pythons and boas over 6 feet, crocodilians, raptors, kangaroos, and skunks. Ferrets are specifically banned despite being domesticated elsewhere. Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, most non-venomous reptiles under 6 ft, and birds (except raptors) are allowed. DOHMH inspectors respond to 311 complaints and work with NYPD Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad. The Bronx Zoo operates under a separate scientific/educational permit.
Possession of prohibited species: $2,000 per animal plus seizure. Exhibition without permit: $2,500+. Dangerous wildlife (venomous snakes, big cats): potential criminal charges under NY Penal Law.
