Cambridge prohibits exotic and wild animals as pets, following Massachusetts state law (321 CMR 9.01) which restricts dangerous species to licensed facilities.
Cambridge defers to Massachusetts state regulations on exotic animals, which are among the strictest in the United States. Under 321 CMR 9.01, issued by the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, private ownership of most wild and exotic animals is prohibited. This includes primates, large cats, wolves, bears, venomous reptiles, crocodilians, and most constrictor snakes over a certain size. Only licensed zoos, research facilities, and educators may possess these animals. Within Cambridge, Chapter 6.04 of the Municipal Code reinforces the state ban and gives the Animal Commission authority to seize illegally kept animals. Common pets like dogs, cats, ferrets, small parrots, aquarium fish, hamsters, rabbits, and guinea pigs are allowed without special permits. Given Cambridge research density (Harvard, MIT, biotech), legitimate research facilities with IACUC oversight are an exception.
