Cambridge prohibits intentional feeding of wildlife including deer, turkeys, waterfowl, and raccoons; rodent-friendly bird feeding may also trigger violations.
Cambridge restricts wildlife feeding under Chapter 6.08 of the Municipal Code and the Rodent Control Ordinance. Intentional feeding of deer, wild turkeys, waterfowl (at Fresh Pond and the Charles River), squirrels, raccoons, and feral cats is prohibited. The rationale includes rodent attraction, aggressive wildlife behavior, and disease transmission. Bird feeders are allowed but must be maintained to prevent spillage; feeders that attract rats are treated as violations of the Rodent Control Ordinance, carrying fines up to 300 dollars per occurrence. Cambridge Public Health and Inspectional Services enforce these rules. Fresh Pond Reservation has posted no-feeding signs around the perimeter and active enforcement, given the drinking water source. Feeding feral cats via registered Trap-Neuter-Return colonies is allowed with MSPCA coordination but unmanaged feeding is not.
