Prince William County Code Ch. 4, Article VI regulates wild and exotic animals, and the county follows Virginia's ban on possessing dangerous nonnative and native wildlife. Exotic reptiles and other listed wild animals cannot be kept as household pets.
Article VI of PWC Code Ch. 4 (Wild or Exotic Animals) restricts keeping wild or exotic animals within the county. The county defers to Virginia wildlife law: under VA Code Sec. 29.1-569 and the Department of Wildlife Resources regulations, it is unlawful to possess certain dangerous or nonnative reptiles and wild animals without a permit. The Zoning Ordinance separately allows the noncommercial keeping or breeding of exotic birds and miniature animals (other than dogs) only pursuant to the standards of Sec. 32-300.02. Common caged pets (fish, small birds, etc.) are treated as ordinary domestic animals, but big cats, primates, venomous reptiles, and similar species are prohibited or heavily permitted.
Possessing a prohibited wild or exotic animal violates PWC Code Ch. 4 Art. VI and Virginia wildlife law (Sec. 29.1-569); the animal may be seized and the keeper charged with a misdemeanor. State wildlife violations carry additional fines and confiscation
