NY Environmental Conservation Law Section 11-0512 prohibits possession of wild animals as pets statewide. Albany County enforces this ban plus local restrictions on certain reptiles and primates.
NY ECL 11-0512 bans possession of big cats, bears, wolves, primates, venomous reptiles, and crocodilians as pets. Licensed zoos, wildlife rehabilitators, and research facilities are exempt. Albany County does not issue local exotic pet permits. Common exotics such as ferrets, non-venomous snakes, and parrots remain legal.
Violations of ECL 11-0512 carry fines up to 500 dollars per animal plus seizure by DEC Environmental Conservation Officers.
