Miami-Dade County, FL Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

County Code Section 5-10(h) requires all dogs and cats sold in the County to have a microchip implanted prior to sale. The seller must register the microchip with the national registry tied to the chip and provide the microchip number and identifying information to the Animal Services Department. Within 48 hours of the sale, the seller must also notify the Department and the national registry, giving the new owner's name, address, and phone number. Breeding females used by kennels, breeders, and pet dealers must likewise be microchipped under Section 5-9(f)-(i). Chapter 5 applies in both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the County (Section 5-2(a)), so this sale requirement reaches the 34 municipalities, though a municipality may adopt its own equal-or-stricter sales regulations under Section 5-10(m).
